Students sometimes get confused with commonly used English sayings and words because at first listening, they just don't make sense! Just like Chinese people say "kuai" when they mean "yuan", English speakers also have their own vernacular (common speech) in words and phrases.
学生有时会对常用的英语谚语和单词感到困惑,因为这些词句一听,就让人摸不着头脑! 就像中国人说“块”时的意思是“元”一样,说英语的人也会用一些非正式口语化(普通话)的词汇和短语。
Try to think of some other Chinese vernacular words and phrases then see if you can explain them in English to your teacher. Alternatively, you could teach your foreign teacher some Chinese vernacular to improve their terrible Chinese!
